It can be difficult to consistently fit the gym into our every day routine. We have full time jobs, families to take care of and sanity to keep. Time is valued and driving to and from the gym alone can take too long for some of us. As we continue to put it off we still recognize exercise is one the most important things we can do for our bodies and mind and heck, we are worth giving that to ourselves.

The older we get, the more responsibilities we take on, leaving us less time to fit in exercise. But the need to fit in exercise only becomes more important as we age because our bones depend on it to stay strong and healthy. Bones are living tissues the provide structure, protect organs and anchor muscles. They are constantly being broken down and replaced. It is essential for us to exercise our bones throughout our entire lives in order to keep our bodies strong. As we age the risk for the osteoporosis increases. Osteoporosis often affects all races and genders, although white women past menopause are at the highest risk. It occurs when bones become weak and brittle and new bones are not building quickly enough to keep up with removal of old bones. Just thirty minutes of exercise a day can help keep your bones strong. Johns Hopkins Medical recommends the use of resistance bands; the safest method to increase bone strength and help prevent osteoporosis.

One huge advantage to resistance band exercise is the ability to work out anywhere. They can be done right inside your home. You can use them while waiting for your home cooked meal to come out of the oven or in privacy of your bedroom. Resistance bands provide a force against which your muscles must work. This action causes muscles to contract, which stimulates bone as well as muscle growth. Similar to the lbs of dumbbells, bands have different resistances making some easier or harder to use than others.

Next time you create a daily laundry list of things to accomplish, a resistance band exercise will be one you can’t resist to check off!
